Kenya, 12 November 2025 — Somalia’s Future Council, a coalition comprising the Somali Salvation Forum and the regional administrations of Jubaland and Puntland, has urged adherence to the constitution and credible electoral process ahead of the 2026 federal polls. The call came at the close of a three-day meeting in Nairobi, where members discussed the country’s political and security situation, national unity, and preparations for the Council’s upcoming national convention. The gathering followed technical committee meetings earlier this month aimed at developing the Council’s political strategy and roadmap. The Council said it will hold its national convention inside Somalia, stressing the need to maintain stability and preserve the democratic tradition of elections every four years. It called for the next vote to be conducted on time and through consensus among all political actors. In a statement, the Council warned against what it described as unconstitutional actions by federal institutions, including abuse of power, illegal amendments to the 2012 Provisional Constitution, interference with state agencies, and politicization of migration. It said such actions threaten Somalia’s federal system, democratic progress, and national unity. The Council also called on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to return to full compliance with the 2012 Provisional Constitution and to take part in efforts to protect Somalia from constitutional and leadership gaps. “This is essential to ensure free, fair, and timely elections,” the Council said. It urged Somali citizens to remain united and prepare to safeguard the country’s political future through free and credible elections.
