Kenya, January 22, 2026 Somali Future Council, a key opposition coalition, is meeting in Nairobi today to consider the federal government's invitation to talks to resolve longstanding differences on constitutional and electoral reforms.
The meeting, in the Kenyan capital, brings together members of the council, although the exact number of attendees has not been officially confirmed.
The discussions will focus on an invitation issued by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration on Monday, calling on the council to participate in the national consultation in Mogadishu scheduled for February 1 — a request the opposition had previously made.

The government has stated that the meeting aims to find solutions to the electoral deadlock in the country.
The opposition council includes the presidents of Puntland and Jubaland, along with influential figures who have previously held positions within the country’s opposition.
While the outcome of the Nairobi meeting remains uncertain, a rejection or conditions imposed by the council could pose challenges to the February 1 consultation and deepen divisions among political actors, particularly regarding the unresolved electoral process.
