Somalia, 19 November 2025 — Somalia’s National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) says more than 40 registered political parties have formally requested a postponement of the upcomng Banaadir local council elections.
The commission revealed the development on Tuesday during a meeting with political parties registered to participate in the polls.
NIEBC Chairperson Abdihakim Ahmed Hassan said the associations cited limited preparation time and a range of administrative challenges as reasons for seeking an extension.
“More than forty associations have submitted requests asking for additional time beyond the 30 November date we had scheduled. Today we want to understand the reasons behind these requests and the challenges you are facing,” the chairperson told participants.
