HARGEISA – President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) of Somaliland has formed a committee to organize the May 18, 2025 celebrations. This date marks Somaliland’s self-declared independence from Somalia, proclaimed on May 18, 1991.
There is growing speculation that the Trump administration may recognize Somaliland as a sovereign nation. While Somaliland considers itself independent, most countries regard it as an autonomous region of Somalia.
In his announcement, President Abdillahi highlighted the importance of May 18 for Somaliland’s unity and global standing. He also noted this will be the first commemoration under the “Unity and Action” administration and called for a well-coordinated national effort.
The committee will be led by the Minister of Interior and Security, with the Minister of Information serving as deputy chair and the Minister of the Presidency as secretary. Nine members in total will serve, including other government officials. All government bodies and local administrations have been urged to fully support the committee’s work.
However, indications suggest that the day may not be observed this year in the SSC-Khaatumo regions.
