Somaliland, 31 October 2025 — President Abdirahman Mahamed Abdullahi ‘Irro’ today launched the construction of the Wajaale Agricultural Development Project, an initiative to aid Somaliland achieve self-sufficiency in food production.
The project, to be implemented by Pharo Foundation, aims to transform farming in the Wajaale plains by increasing domestic production, improving water systems, and establishing modern farms supported by advanced technology and agricultural expertise.
While laying the foundation stone, President Irro expressed optimism, noting that the project will drive economic growth, strengthen food self-sufficiency, and create jobs.
“The most important aspect of this project is that it will give us food self-sufficiency. I hope that once completed, it will provide us with enough food,” President Cirro said.
He added that the people of Wajale and surrounding areas will benefit from increased income and essential services.
The project will be implemented using advanced technology, including the construction of water reservoirs, modern irrigation systems, livestock fodder production facilities, and environmental protection measures to combat soil erosion and land degradation.
Tom Mason, CEO of Pharo Foundation, and Mahamed Muse Elmi, the foundation’s Somaliland representative, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting the Wajaale community by promoting sustainable livelihoods based on knowledge, technology, and essential services.

The initiative is expected to positively impact thousands of households by creating job opportunities, boosting agricultural output, and stimulating the local economy, positioning it among the most significant development projects launched in Somaliland in recent years.
