Hargeisa – Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro) has reaffirmed that the parliamentary and local council elections will be held as scheduled on May 31, 2026, dismissing any speculation of delays.
During a meeting with the Somaliland National Electoral Commission (NEC), President Cirro, accompanied by the Vice President, discussed election preparations, logistical challenges, and financial requirements to ensure a smooth electoral process.
Government Pledges Financial Support for Elections
The NEC updated the President on the current status of election preparations, highlighting the need for sufficient funding to facilitate the process effectively. In response, President Cirro assured the commission of full financial support from his administration to guarantee that the elections proceed as planned.
No Delays Expected in Somaliland Elections
Reiterating his commitment, President Cirro dismissed any concerns of postponement, emphasizing that the elections will be conducted on time.
"The elections will be held on May 31, 2026, as scheduled," the Somaliland Presidency confirmed in an official statement.
The upcoming elections will be held across all regions of Somaliland, where 82 members of the House of Representatives will be elected through a direct, secret ballot, as stipulated in Article 40 of the Somaliland Constitution.
Five-Year Term for Elected Officials
Candidates elected in the parliamentary and local council elections will serve a five-year term, beginning on the date the Supreme Court announces the final election results.
