Mogadishu, Somalia (Dawan Africa) – The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) officially revealed the list of 43 political parties that have registered to participate in Somalia’s upcoming three-party political system on Saturday, June 21, 2025. The announcement confirms that these parties have met all the legal requirements necessary to compete in the country’s electoral process.
According to the NIEBC’s statement, these political parties have completed the registration process and are fully eligible to engage in Somalia’s political activities, marking a crucial step in the country’s efforts to formalize its political system and establish a more organized electoral process.
However, the release of this list has sparked some discontent, particularly among political figures associated with certain parties. Notably, parties led by former political leaders are absent from the list. These include the Himilo Qaran party, led by former interim president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, and the Wadajir party, led by member of parliament Abdishakur Abdikarim. Several other political parties are also missing from the registered list, causing dissatisfaction among their leaders and supporters.
Many of the politicians affiliated with the Somali Salvation Forum have expressed frustration with the way the electoral process is being managed by the commission and the government. They have voiced concerns about the inclusiveness and transparency of the registration process, highlighting the absence of key political groups from the official list of registered parties.
Despite these controversies, the NIEBC has proceeded with the voter registration process for the upcoming elections, a critical step in ensuring that eligible citizens can participate in the electoral process. This development is viewed as a key moment in Somalia’s ongoing transition towards a more stable and organized political system, even as disagreements over the electoral framework continue to unfold.
