UK Pledges $3.9 Million to Strengthen Somali Security Forces

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA – April 14, 2025 — The United Kingdom has announced an additional $3.9 million contribution to the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) to reinforce the Somali Security Forces (SSF) in their continued fight against Al-Shabaab. This new funding raises the UK’s total support for Somalia to over $50 million since 2021.

Targeted Support for Frontline Forces

The latest assistance package will provide critical supplies such as food rations, fuel, and medical services to bolster the operational capacity of the Somali Security Forces. The support aims to enhance their ability to conduct sustained operations against terrorist threats and improve regional stability.

Diplomatic and Strategic Endorsement

UK Ambassador to Somalia, Mike Nithavrianakis, reaffirmed the UK's commitment to Somalia’s security. "The UK is a strong partner of Somalia, and I’m pleased to announce this additional support to fight extremism. I encourage all other partners to support the UNSOS SSF fund to reinforce Somalia’s brave forces," he stated.

Somalia’s National Security Advisor, Hussein Sheikh Ali, welcomed the funding and emphasized the government's dedication to transparency and accountability in managing international aid. He underscored the importance of international partnerships in the country’s efforts to eliminate Al-Shabaab and other security threats.

Ongoing Efforts Toward Stability

The UK’s contribution is part of a broader international effort to support Somalia’s state-building and security sector reform. The funding is expected to significantly enhance the SSF’s operational effectiveness in securing territory and protecting civilians.
