United States, 15 January 2026 — The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to non-interference in Somalia’s internal affairs, emphasizing that the country's future should be shaped by its own people
Masad Boulos, a senior adviser to the U.S. President on Arab and African affairs, made the remarks in an interview with Al Hadath on Wednesday, saying Washington views issues related to Somalia’s unity and political future as matters that belong solely to the Somali people.
“The U.S. position on Somalia’s unity and maintaining the current situation has not changed,” Boulos said, adding that it is difficult to predict how the issue may evolve in the future.
He noted that Somalia historically consisted of two separate states, which quickly chose unity after independence, despite having emerged from different colonial administrations.

“The decision to unite was taken voluntarily by the Somali people,” he said, stressing that the United States will not become involved in Somalia’s internal affairs.
Boulos also addressed the question of potential future recognition issues, saying these remain difficult to forecast, but emphasized that Washington’s stance has already been clearly articulated.
He pointed out that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has publicly reaffirmed the United States’ support for Somalia’s unity.
The remarks come amid ongoing political debates within Somalia concerning governance, unity, and the country’s future political direction.
