U.S. Secretary of State Discusses Security, Counterterrorism with Somali President

Washington, D.C.(Mogadishu24)-In a phone call today, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and discussed mutual security interests in the Horn of Africa. The conversation focused on reducing regional tensions, counterterrorism efforts, and planning for a successor to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) according to a statement from U.S Department of State.

Secretary Blinken emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the United States and Somalia to address ongoing security challenges in the region. Both leaders acknowledged the need to finalize plans for a new mission to replace ATMIS, ensuring continued support for Somalia's stability and security.

The discussion also highlighted the critical role of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) in supporting the country’s political and security framework.
