25 November 2025 - Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi on Tuesday delivered a 56-minute State of the County speech in which he set out the administration’s achievements and future plans.
Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, who also chairs the Council of Governors, told the County Assembly that his administration has taken bold measures to improve the lives of Wajir residents.
Despite the county receiving minimal rainfall, he said the introduction of climate-smart agriculture has enabled farmers and pastoralists to earn income from crops and livestock.
One standout initiative is the Griftu waterpan and feedlot project in Wajir West, which has created an organised livestock management system.
“The feedlot, spanning 5,000 acres, can support up to 15,000 livestock units,” the Governor stated.
He explained that the project, carried out in partnership with the national government, serves as a drought mitigation measure, providing pasture and water for pastoralists even in the harshest conditions.
He also highlighted the Masalale Community Farm, where farmers now earn KSh 430,000 in monthly profits.
“This shows that well-designed community farms can deliver genuine economic empowerment,” he added.
Governor Abdullahi said these successes demonstrate the county’s ability to unlock the potential of its arid land, laying the foundation for a food-secure, economically empowered, and climate-resilient Wajir whose citizens can better withstand climate-induced shocks.
Speaking on water provision, the Governor said the county now has 377 working boreholes, cutting the need for water trucking.
However, he noted that 77 centres still depend on emergency supplies while permanent solutions are put in place.
In education, 179 new Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) centres have been built.
A total of 178 ECDE teachers have been moved to permanent and pensionable terms, with another 23 due to be confirmed this financial year.Health services are also seeing improvement.
Wajir Referral Hospital is being upgraded from Level 4 to Level 5, and other measures are in train to raise the quality of care.
On roads and urban development, 8.2 kilometres of tarmac have been completed in Wajir town centre under the World Bank-funded KISP II project.
The Governor announced that Wajir Sub-County headquarters will soon be granted municipality status.
He reported that own-source revenue rose to KSh 329 million in the last financial year, helped by new digital collection systems.
Progress was also made in town planning and the issuing of title deeds.
Social programmes remain a priority, with continued funding for bursaries and support for people with disabilities.
Several executive Bills are being brought forward to strengthen governance.
Wrapping up his address, Governor Abdullahi said devolution has brought clear gains to Wajir and stressed that his administration will keep focusing on better services and lasting development across the county.
