Kenya, 30 December 2025 - The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has announced the launch of the inaugural direct charter flight from Budapest, Hungary, to Moi International Airport in Mombasa, marking a significant milestone in efforts to boost tourism to the Kenyan Coast.
The new route is a partnership between Smartwings Airlines, Private Safaris, and Hungarian travel company IBUSZ.
The inaugural flight touched down at Moi International Airport on Tuesday, to a spectacular water cannon salute, symbolizing the official commencement of the service.
A high-level delegation was present to receive the flight, led by KAA Board Chairman Caleb Kositany.
Also in attendance were Private Safaris Chief Executive Officer Alexander Spiro, Smartwings CEO Attila Farkas, KAA General Manager for Operations and Safety Dr Simon Peter, Coast Region Regional Airport Manager Abel Gogo, and Mombasa County Executive Committee Member in charge of Tourism Mohamed Osman.
Speaking during the reception, officials described the new route as a major boost to Kenya’s tourism sector, particularly the Coast region, which continues to attract international visitors seeking beach holidays, wildlife safaris, and rich Swahili cultural experiences.
The weekly charter service is scheduled to operate for nine rotations and is expected to bring in high-value tourists from Eastern Europe, a growing source market for Kenya’s tourism industry.

The influx of visitors is projected to stimulate the local economy through increased demand for hotels, tour services, transport, and other hospitality-related businesses.
With the addition of the Budapest–Mombasa route, Moi International Airport continues to strengthen its position as a key gateway for international tourism.
The new service joins an already established roster of charter operators serving the airport, including Condor, Neos Air, Discover Airlines, and Enterair.
KAA said the launch aligns with its broader strategy to expand international connectivity, support regional tourism growth, and position Mombasa as a preferred destination for global travelers.
