Kenya, December 17 2025 - A postmortem examination has confirmed that former Lugari MP and long-serving politician Cyrus Jirongo died from extensive blunt force injuries sustained in the fatal road crash at Karai, Naivasha, on 13 December.
The autopsy was conducted at Lee Funeral Home on Tuesday in the presence of government pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor and the family’s pathologist, Dr Joseph Ndung’u. The two specialists jointly briefed the media, offering the first detailed medical account of the injuries that ended the veteran politician’s life.
According to Dr Ndung’u, the trauma Jirongo suffered was “consistent with a violent impact,” affecting several major parts of the body. The chest bore the worst damage, with multiple rib fractures and a perforated heart. Major blood vessels connected to the heart were ruptured, causing significant internal bleeding.
The abdomen also suffered crush injuries, with bleeding into the abdominal cavity and damage to the liver. Dr Ndung’u added that the spinal cord had been transected, alongside fractures on both legs and two fractures in the right hand. These widespread injuries, he noted, were not compatible with survival.
Police officers were present during the postmortem as part of ongoing investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), which has been working to reconstruct Jirongo’s final moments.

Earlier this week, the DCI released CCTV footage collected from Eagol Petrol Station, located near the crash scene. The footage shows Jirongo driving into the station at 2:18:40 a.m. from the Nairobi direction. Although he did not refuel, he paused briefly at the exit before turning back towards Nairobi. Just seconds later, at 2:19:25 a.m., a Climax Company Ltd bus was captured ramming into his vehicle in what investigators described as a head-on impact.
The crash pushed Jirongo’s car approximately 25 metres from the point of collision, while the bus came to rest 50 metres away. Detectives have since questioned the bus driver, who remains out on cash bail and is expected to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base for further inquiry.
Investigators are also interviewing witnesses, including individuals who met Jirongo earlier that evening at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant. Additional reviews of CCTV footage and statements from bus passengers are ongoing. Once complete, the DCI will forward a comprehensive file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for review.
