Uganda, 16 January 2026 - Uganda's main opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi popularly known as Bobi Wine has rejected the latest provisional presidential election results, accusing the Electoral Commission of releasing figures whose source cannot be explained as vote tallying continues nationwide.
In a strongly worded statement shared on social media, Wine questioned the authority of Electoral Commission chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama to announce what he termed unverified numbers, urging Ugandans to disregard the updates.
“Ignore the ‘fake’ results being announced by Simon Byabakama. He can’t tell anybody where those results are coming from,” Wine posted on X.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) leader insisted that the outcome of the 2026 presidential race can only be determined through officially verified results emerging from accredited polling stations and recognised tallying centres.
He further claimed that his party’s representatives at the national tally centre had repeatedly demanded clarification on the origin of the announced figures, without success.
“Our agents at the tally centre are asking him for the source of these results, and the regime enabler can’t say a thing,” he continued.
Wine’s remarks come amid heightened political tension as the Electoral Commission released updated figures showing President Yoweri Museveni maintaining a commanding lead. As of 2:00 pm, results from 30,138 polling stations indicated that Museveni had secured 5,148,845 votes (75.38 per cent), while Bobi Wine trailed with 1,414,619 votes (20.71 per cent).
All other candidates remained in single-digit percentages. Nandala Mafabi had 144,564 votes (2.12%), Mugisha Muntu 38,582 (0.56%), Frank Bulira 29,713 (0.44%), Robert Kasibante 20,626 (0.30%), Mubarak Munyagwa 19,034 (0.28%), and Joseph Mabirizi 14,106 (0.21%).

The commission also reported 170,655 invalid votes and 22,356 spoilt ballots, bringing the total number of votes counted so far to 7,000,744, with 6,830,089 valid votes tallied.
Beyond disputing the results, Wine raised concerns about his personal security, alleging that security forces surrounded his residence shortly after he voted, effectively restricting his movement.
“Yesterday, after casting my ballot, the military deployed all around my home in order to place me under house arrest. They even jumped over the fence and entered our compound,” he said.
He described the situation as a “siege” on his home, suggesting the move was driven by fears over public reaction as the vote count unfolds.
The Electoral Commission has announced that the next update on the presidential tally will be issued at 6:00 pm on Friday as counting continues in the remaining polling stations across the country.
