Somalia, 29 January 2026 The European Union announced a €102 million ($120 million) aid package for Somalia on Thursday, targeting stabilization, economic development, education, and migration management through 2026.
The funding was unveiled at a ceremony at the EU Delegation headquarters in Mogadishu, attended by EU Ambassador Francesco de Maura, EU Deputy Director-General Myriam Ferran, Finance Minister Bihi Iman Egeh, and Planning Minister Mohamud Benebene.
"This investment continues our support to your country's progress," Ferran said. "It is focused on economic stabilization, strengthening governance, and improving migration management."
The allocation breaks down across four priority areas: €30 million for state-building and economic growth initiatives, including public financial management reforms; €27 million for migration management supporting refugees and internally displaced persons; €25 million for education system improvements; and €20 million for stabilization efforts in conflict-affected regions.

Planning Minister Benebene acknowledged the EU's sustained engagement with Somalia. "The EU has consistently supported Somalia over the years," he said. "We promise to use the funds efficiently and effectively."
The announcement comes as Somalia continues navigating security challenges and economic reconstruction following decades of conflict. The migration management component reflects ongoing European concerns about irregular migration from the Horn of Africa region.
Finance Minister Egeh said the investment would "contribute to building a stronger, more resilient economy," though he did not specify timelines for implementation or detail how the funds would be disbursed across federal member states.
The EU has been a major donor to Somalia, mainly focusing on social and economic development programmes.
