Kenya, 28 November 2025 - Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has described micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as the true heartbeat of communities and the driving force behind sustainable economic development.
Speaking at the Fourth Kenya Public–Private Sector MSMEs Dialogue in Kisumu, the Governor said MSMEs create jobs for the youth, support low-income families, spark innovation and power both local and national growth.
“The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises of Kisumu are not just businesses. They are the heartbeat of our communities. They employ our young people, drive innovation and fuel the engine of the county’s and the nation’s economy,” Prof Nyong'o said.
Governor Nyong’o highlighted several county initiatives to support MSMEs, including the “Buy Kisumu, Build Kisumu” policy, which encourages residents and institutions to purchase locally produced goods and services.
The policy aims to boost visibility, competitiveness and market access for Kisumu enterprises.

Governor Nyong'o said that the county is strengthening value chains in agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing and services, while opening doors to regional and international markets.
Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and MSMEs Development Wycliffe Oparanya echoed the Governor’s views, noting that MSMEs contribute over 40% of Kenya’s GDP and employ most of the workforce.
He reaffirmed the national government’s commitment to policy reforms to help the sector grow.
