Djibouti ( Dawan Africa)- The agreement signed on August 25, 2025 by President Hassan Sheikh with four members of the opposition coalition, also known as the Somali Salvation Forum, has received its first regional backing, with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) throwing its weight behind the deal and urging other political actors to follow suit and work toward a comprehensive national settlement.
In a statement on Wednesday, IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu described the deal as “an important step toward advancing unity, stability, and reconciliation” in Somalia.
He commended the parties for their leadership and political will, and congratulated President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for what he called his “statesmanship and commitment to guiding the country toward peace and inclusivity.”
Dr. Workneh encouraged all Somali stakeholders to emulate this constructive step, stressing that compromise is vital in resolving outstanding disputes and achieving lasting peace.
He further reaffirmed IGAD’s continued support to Somalia through mediation efforts and close partnership with the country’s leadership and citizens, aimed at consolidating peace, stability, and development across the Federal Republic of Somalia.
