Ethiopia, 7 January 2026 The African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) has strongly condemned Israel’s unilateral recognition of Somaliland, describing the move as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity.
In a communiqué adopted at its 1324th ministerial-level meeting in Addis Ababa, the PSC expressed “deep concern” over Israel’s action, warning that it threatens stability in Somalia and across the Horn of Africa. The Council rejected the recognition “in the strongest terms” and called for its immediate revocation.
The PSC reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the sovereignty and unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, stressing that no external actor has the authority to alter the borders of an African Union member state. It underlined that any such declaration is “null, void, and without legal effect under international law.”

The Council welcomed an earlier statement by the Chairperson of the AU Commission rejecting any initiative aimed at recognizing Somaliland as an independent entity, cautioning that such actions set a dangerous precedent with far-reaching implications for peace and security on the continent.
The PSC also urged all AU member states and international partners to stand in solidarity with Somalia, reject illegal actions undermining international principles, and support efforts at the United Nations to uphold Somalia’s territorial integrity. At the same time, it commended the Federal Government of Somalia’s state-building efforts and encouraged inclusive internal dialogue as the only viable path to resolving political differences.
The Council concluded by stressing the importance of maintaining momentum in the fight against Al-Shabaab and confirmed it would remain actively seized of the matter.
