Somalia, 8 January 2026 – The U.S. Department of State has suspended with immediate effect all ongoing humanitarian assistance programs in Somalia channeled through the World Food Programme (WFP).
The suspension follows allegations that Somali government officials diverted 76 metric tons of food aid meant for vulnerable communities.
The U.S. expressed concern over the illegal seizure of the aid and stated that the resumption of assistance would be contingent on the Somali government taking responsibility for these actions and implementing appropriate corrective measures.

The Department emphasized that future aid distribution would be contingent on transparency and accountability in Somalia's humanitarian operations.
The move comes unexpectedly, and it is expected to have a significant impact on the humanitarian situation in Somalia. The U.S. had previously reduced its aid to countries facing crisis situations, including Somalia.
