Kenya, 11 November 2025 - In an effort to promote quality and sustainability in food production, the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) has announced a seasonal ban on the harvesting and trade of domestically produced macadamia nuts.
The directive will be in effect from December 1, 2025, to February 15, 2026, and applies to all actors in the macadamia value chain, including processors, exporters, importers, and marketing agents.
According to AFA, the temporary suspension is intended to ensure that harvesting takes place only when the nuts have reached optimal maturity, thereby improving the quality and competitiveness of Kenyan macadamias in both local and international markets.
In a notice dated November 10, 2025, AFA Director General Dr. Bruno Linyiru stated that the suspension is necessary to allow the crop to reach full maturity and to uphold the quality standards of Kenyan macadamia in both local and international markets.
“The Authority hereby notifies all macadamia value chain actors that harvesting and trade of domestically produced macadamia nuts shall not be permitted from 1st December 2025 to 15th February 2026,” said Dr. Linyiru.
The Authority further noted that the existing ban on the export of raw, in-shell macadamia nuts remains in effect.
A recent phenological survey conducted across key macadamia-producing regions revealed that a significant portion of the crop is still in the maturation stage, underscoring the need for the temporary suspension.
AFA has urged all stakeholders in the macadamia sector to strictly comply with the directive.
Dr. Linyiru reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to supporting the growth and sustainability of the industry, emphasizing that responsible harvesting practices are key to maintaining Kenya’s position as a leading global macadamia producer.
