Cairo, 26 December 2025 The League of Arab States has strongly condemned Israel’s announcement recognizing the Somaliland region as an independent state, warning that the move is provocative, unacceptable, and risks undermining regional stability.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the decision, announced by the Israeli Prime Minister earlier on 26 December, constitutes a clear violation of international law and a blatant infringement of the principles of state unity and sovereignty enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
Aboul Gheit stressed that the Arab League categorically rejects any unilateral recognition of Somaliland, noting that such actions disregard established legal rules governing the recognition of states under international law. He described the move as an assault on the sovereignty of an Arab and African state, warning that it reflects attempts to cooperate with third parties to destabilize the region.

The Secretary-General further linked the decision to Israel’s broader conduct in the region, accusing it of committing grave violations against the Palestinian people and neighboring territories while ignoring international legitimacy and resolutions.
Separately, Arab League spokesperson Gamal Roshdy reaffirmed that the League’s Council—at both summit and ministerial levels—considers Somaliland an integral part of the internationally recognized sovereign Federal Republic of Somalia.
Roshdy warned that imposing unilateral recognitions constitutes unacceptable interference in Somalia’s internal affairs and sets a dangerous precedent that threatens regional and international security and stability.
