Djibouti, 26 December 2025 The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has welcomed the successful conduct of municipal elections in Mogadishu on 25 December, describing the vote as an important step toward democratic governance in Somalia.
In a statement issued from Djibouti, IGAD noted that improved security conditions enabled the orderly organization of the elections and commended both the Somali people and the Federal Government for facilitating the process. The regional bloc said the polls mark an initial move toward the direct election of representatives by citizens, contributing to broader efforts to advance democracy nationwide.
IGAD urged all political stakeholders to engage in an inclusive and consultative dialogue based on mutual compromise, stressing that such engagement is essential to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring lasting peace and stability in Somalia.
