Kenya, January 4 2026 -Manchester United fought back to earn a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road, rescuing a point in their Premier League campaign after falling behind in the second half.
The match remained tightly contested through a goalless first half, with both sides creating opening chances but failing to break the deadlock. Leeds’ Brenden Aaronson ultimately broke the stalemate in the 62nd minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to slot home coolly and give the hosts the lead.
However, United responded swiftly. Just three minutes after falling behind, substitute Joshua Zirkzee threaded a precise pass through the Leeds defence to Matheus Cunha, who slid the ball past goalkeeper Lucas Perri to level the score at 1–1. Cunha’s equaliser not only brought United back into the contest but ensured they left with a share of the points.
Despite efforts from both sides in the closing stages, including late opportunities for Leeds’ Joel Piroe and Noah Okafor, and a near-winner from Cunha that struck the post, neither team could find a decisive second goal.

The draw maintained Leeds’ unbeaten run to seven matches, a run that has boosted them away from relegation danger. For United, the point sees them sitting fifth in the Premier League table, although they missed the chance to move into the top four as they continue their pursuit of European qualification.
United manager Rúben Amorim will be encouraged by his side’s resilience, particularly in fighting back after falling behind despite missing nearly half of his first team to injury and international duties including captain Bruno Fernandes, but will also reflect on missed chances that could have secured all three points. With injuries and squad rotation impacting consistency, finding sharper attacking form remains a key priority for the Reds in the weeks ahead.
