November, 28 2025 - Mandera County marks the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, hosting a public awareness event aimed at protecting girls and women from abuse and harmful practices.
The event brought together stakeholders including women leaders, elders, community activists, and young girls, all united in raising concern over the growing cases of gender-based violence and advocating for stronger protection measures.
Speakers highlighted a worrying rise in digital exploitation within the county, where young girls are increasingly being coerced or threatened into exposing themselves online. Parents and local leaders expressed alarm over the trend, urging vigilance in monitoring children’s use of mobile phones and social media.
“We must guide our daughters to be careful with what they share online,” said one women leader, warning that predators continue to take advantage of technology to target vulnerable girls.
County Chief Officer for Women Empowerment and Affirmative Action, Farhiya Ali, reaffirmed the county’s commitment to ensuring justice and support for survivors of gender-based violence.
“To the survivors, I say: you matter. Your voice matters. Your healing matters, and your courage inspires change,” she said. She also called for stronger collaborations with partners to broaden prevention strategies and improve protection for those at risk.

Women leader Zeinab Mude urged mothers in Mandera to stay close to their daughters, noting that monitoring their wellbeing is essential in preventing exploitation.
“Our girls need guidance and protection. As mothers, we must know the steps they take and ensure they are safe from any form of danger,” she said.
She further encouraged girls to make use of available opportunities such as free basic and tertiary education to build brighter futures. “Education is your power to use the resources available in this county to strengthen your future and become leaders of tomorrow,” she added.
The event concluded with a call to action for the community to create safer environments at home, in schools, and online ensuring that girls can grow and thrive without fear.
