Kenya, 20 December 2025 - Mbagathi County Hospital’s newly equipped physiotherapy unit signals a broader shift in Nairobi’s public healthcare—from treating illness to restoring wellness and preventing future disease.
The upgrade, which introduces modern rehabilitation equipment such as medical treadmills, multi-gym exercisers and cardiopulmonary training tools, positions the hospital as a growing centre for rehabilitative and promotive care.
Beyond improving post-surgery and injury recovery, the facility addresses the rising burden of lifestyle-related and chronic conditions by integrating supervised exercise therapy into mainstream treatment.
Hospital managers say this approach shortens recovery time, restores patient independence, and reduces repeat admissions.
Governor Johnson Sakaja described the investment as part of a deliberate policy pivot.
“Healthcare is not just about curing sickness... it is about helping people live healthier, fuller lives,” Sakaja said.

“By strengthening rehabilitation and preventive care at facilities like Mbagathi, we are building a system that supports recovery, dignity and long-term wellness for Nairobi residents.”
Mbagathi Hospital CEO Dr Alex Irungu said the unit reflects a deeper rethinking of patient care, where treatment extends beyond the ward.
Analysts note that such investments could ease pressure on overstretched hospitals by lowering complications and long-term disability, while also aligning county health services with preventive care goals.
As Nairobi grapples with growing demand for healthcare, Mbagathi’s physiotherapy upgrade illustrates how targeted investments can reshape public hospitals from crisis-response centres into engines of recovery, resilience and wellness.
