Somalia, 14 October 2025 — Somali opposition leaders have declared their intention to proceed with demonstrations in Mogadishu “with or without government permission”.
During a meeting at his residence on Tuesday evening, MP Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame issued a stark warning, asserting that any government attempts to interfere with upcoming demonstrations (the date is yet to be announced) would lead to inevitable confrontations.
“This is the second time we’ve given the government a chance. If they fail to permit peaceful protests, we will organize them anyway, and no one will stop us,” said the Wadajir Party leader.
The gathering in Mogadishu was convened to strategize for the rallies after opposition figures expressed frustration over the government’s covert efforts to deny them the right to assemble.
Abdishakur said the opposition would demand official authorization for the demonstrations, warning that if the government attempts to block their peaceful efforts again, they will move forward independently.
In a pointed reference to Defence Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, who had previously mocked similar protests with the phrase “Are you merciless?” during his time in opposition, Abdishakur declared, “We will face each other, and whoever flees the scene will be seen by all of us.”
His remarks come amidst a backdrop of heightened political tension in Mogadishu, following two prior postponements of opposition-led protests. Minister Fiqi has insisted that no protests will be permitted, a stance that draws attention to his controversial history with opposition rallies during the Farmaajo administration, highlighting the shifting dynamics of Somalia’s political landscape.
