Mogadishu, 26 December 2025 The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has congratulated the Somali people on the successful conduct of municipal elections held in the capital, Mogadishu, on 25 December.
In a statement issued from Addis Ababa, the AU Commission Chairperson praised the calm and orderly manner in which the polls were conducted, describing the elections as an important initial step in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to advance democratic governance.
He noted that municipal-level elections play a vital role in strengthening participatory governance and provide valuable experience as Somalia continues to pursue a nationally led political and electoral process.

The AU official encouraged all Somali political stakeholders to remain engaged through constructive dialogue and inclusive consultation, stressing that such an approach is essential to supporting national unity and long-term stability.
The statement also reaffirmed the African Union’s continued commitment to accompanying the Somali people in their efforts to strengthen inclusive governance and advance lasting peace and stability across the country.
