Djibouti (Dawan Africa) – President Ismail Omar Guelleh has ordered an immediate national response to Djibouti’s deepening drought, following a high-level meeting held Wednesday at the Presidential Palace.
The meeting brought together key cabinet ministers responsible for sectors directly involved in managing the drought. According to an official communiqué, discussions focused on reducing the impact of “thirst and water stress” affecting communities across the country.
“All relevant ministries have been instructed to intensify efforts and deliver measurable results,” the statement said. “Separate departments operating around the notion of drought are now assigned to a more supplied workbook, a greater duty of results.”
The government adopted enhanced coordination as the core principle of its strategy, assigning Prime Minister Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed to lead the implementation of the emergency plan.
“The first aid from the State to our citizens affected by the drought will be delivered as early as tomorrow,” said the Prime Minister. “Through the Ministry of Agriculture and National Solidarity, the Government will provide, within 48 hours, water and food to our drought-affected populations.”
Senior government officials in attendance included the Secretary General of the Presidency, Mohamed Abdillahi Waiss, and the Secretary General of Government, Almis Mohamed Abdilahi.
The government stated that the national plan aims to reinforce disaster preparedness, improve regulatory mechanisms, and build long-term resilience to drought.
