Kenya, 24 November 2025 - President William Ruto on Monday afternoon left Nairobi for Luanda, Angola, to attend two major African Union meetings that will focus on peace, development, and long-overdue reforms within the AU.
According to a statement from State House, the President will take part in the 7th African Union–European Union Summit and later chair the AU Institutional Reform Oversight Committee, where he serves as the AU Champion for Institutional Reform.
The State House said the summits come at a crucial time when both continents must respond to shifting global realities.
“President Ruto and fellow leaders will review two decades of Africa–Europe cooperation and address emerging challenges, including shifting geopolitical priorities, funding gaps, and rising security pressures,” the statement noted.
Kenya is expected to emphasise long-term funding for African-led peace operations and stronger cooperation on security and climate.
“Kenya will advance priorities on predictable financing for African-led peace operations, stronger counter-terrorism and border security collaboration, as well as joint action on climate,” adds the post by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed.
While in Luanda, President Ruto will also meet European leaders to push for trade and investment opportunities.

He will highlight Kenya’s push towards a modern, competitive economy driven by new irrigation projects, cleaner energy, and major transport upgrades.
The statement said he will “showcase opportunities under Kenya’s economic transformation roadmap, targeting a transition to a first-world economy.”
On Tuesday, the President will co-chair the AU Institutional Reform Committee, where he will brief African leaders on progress made so far.
The reforms aim to strengthen the AU’s governance and financial independence.
“The reform package seeks to reinforce African unity and enhance the continent’s ability to act decisively in a rapidly shifting global environment,” State House said.
Mr Mohamed said the president's trip underlines Kenya’s commitment to building a stronger, more effective African Union.
