Somalia, 2 November 2025 – Puntland State has launched a livestock vaccination campaign targeting 300, 000 out the estimated 19 million animals.
The one-month campaign led by the Ministry of Livestock, Rangelands and Forestry is will target 3,600 pastoral families who depend on livestock for livelihood.
Speaking during the launch, Vice President Ilyas Osman Lugatoor emphasized the importance of livestock health to Puntland’s economy and livelihoods, at a time when drought and erratic rainfall continue to affect many parts of the region.
The Director-General of the Ministry of Livestock, Hassan Mohamed Ciise Goodir, described the campaign as critical, saying both livestock and pastoral communities are currently facing significant challenges associated with climate change.
“We are urging veterinary teams to reach remote areas and not leave behind a single sick animal. We expect you to double your efforts in this campaign,” the Director-General said.
He stressed that the vaccination period requires high-level cooperation between veterinary teams and pastoral communities to be successful.
The launch ceremony was attended by members of the cabinet, lawmakers, veterinary doctors and local administrators.
The campaign is part of a broader effort to safeguard and improve livestock health, enhance veterinary capacity, and support the pastoral economy that forms the backbone of Puntland’s livelihoods.
