Somalia, 29 December 2025 Sultan Said Mohamed Garaase, one of Puntland's prominent elders, has challenged the leadership of Puntland to make public its position regarding Israel's recognition of Somaliland.
The Sultan warned that silence on the matter could damage Puntland's political reputation and endanger the unity of Somalia.
The Puntland leadership is yet to comment on the Israel-Somaliland agreement made public last Saturday.
Garaase emphasized that Puntland's honor and power is derived from the dignity of its people, influence of their elders and role of its culture. He stated that it is unacceptable for responsible leadership to remain silent on an issue that impacts the national sovereignty of the country.
“We cannot remain silent, and they cannot prioritize their own interests at the expense of the unity of Puntland and Somalia. We will not accept it,” the Sultan said.

Sultan Garaase warned that decisions driven by personal interests could have long-term consequences affecting both Puntland and the wider Somali nation. He stressed that the leadership of Puntland should provide a clear statement defining its stance on the unity of Somalia and the direction it wishes to follow.
“A clear statement is needed,” he said. “If Puntland cannot make a decision, they should make it clear. Two horses cannot ride the same path—Israel and Somalia cannot coexist,” he added.
He further emphasized that the traditional leaders and elders will not conceal their position but will speak openly to the public, explaining what they believe is in the best interest of the community.
Sultan Garaase said Somalia's strength lies in its unity, preventing foreign interference, and maintaining its identity as a Muslim nation. “Somalia stands for unity; it stands as 100 per cent Muslim,” he said.
Israel's recognition of Somaliland has ignited intense debate, both within Somalia and internationally, about its political and legal implications.
