Kenya, 17 December 2025 - President William Ruto has opened the door to a possible political partnership with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in the run-up to the 2027 General Election, signalling a rare moment of unity in Kenya’s often polarised politics.
Addressing residents in Migori during the 5th Piny Luo Festival on Wednesday, the President struck a conciliatory tone, urging ODM to remain united and strong if the two sides are to negotiate meaningfully in future.
Ruto told the gathering that collaboration would only be possible if ODM consolidated its support base, warning that internal divisions weaken a party’s influence. He framed his message as both political and personal, reflecting on his early years under the mentorship of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“I want ODM to organise itself and stay strong,” he said. “If ODM becomes stronger, I will strengthen UDA too, and we can sit together and agree on how to form the next government.”
The President went on to recall his political journey with the late Raila Odinga, describing him as a teacher who helped shape his rise in national leadership. He credited Raila for playing a defining role in his development and said revisiting cooperation with ODM would, in many ways, honour that legacy.
Since Raila’s death, Ruto has increasingly positioned himself as a guardian of ODM’s historical contribution to Kenya’s democracy, frequently praising the party’s resilience and national outlook. His remarks in Migori reinforced that shift, signalling a strategic hand extended to a region traditionally aligned with the opposition.

Beyond politics, Ruto used the platform to assure Nyanza residents of the government’s commitment to equitable development. He said he had held discussions with Migori leaders to ensure the county is fully integrated into national development plans after decades of feeling sidelined.
“Our father Raila Amolo Odinga left us with a message of unity,” he said.
“We agreed to walk together in planning Kenya’s development and shaping the leadership of our nation.”
Ruto insisted that cooperation between leaders at all levels would be crucial in unlocking long-delayed opportunities, pledging that Nyanza would receive its rightful share of national resources.
