Ethiopia, 25 November 2025 — Singapore has officially opened its first embassy in East Africa, located in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, a historic step aimed at expanding the Southeast Asian country's diplomatic footprint and strengthening its engagement with the African continent.
The announcement was made during a joint press conference held by Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and his Ethiopian counterpart, Abiy Ahmed.
The Addis Ababa mission becomes Singapore’s third diplomatic post in Africa — a move that, according to Wong, reflects a “clear commitment to partnership with Ethiopia and strong confidence in its strategic potential.”

He emphasized the “vast opportunities for developing bilateral cooperation,” noting that both countries hold unique geographic positions “that can help stimulate trade and investment flows between Southeast Asia and Africa.”
Wong added that the opening of the embassy embodies the shared vision between the two nations, saying that Singapore’s presence in Addis Ababa will enable it to “engage more effectively with the African Union, gain deeper insight into developments across the continent, and explore new areas of cooperation.”
Analysts note that the move carries broader strategic significance, pointing to Singapore’s growing interest in Africa’s emerging markets and Ethiopia’s role as a key economic and political power in the region.
