Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – Somalia’s Minister of Information, Daud Aweis, announced tonight that the voter registration process in Mogadishu, the capital, has surpassed 500,000 registered voters, marking a significant milestone as the country prepares for its one-person, one-vote elections. The registration officially began on April 15, 2025, and is approaching three months, with the process still ongoing.
"The journey of Somalia towards democracy is gaining momentum! Mogadishu has reached over 500,000 registered voters... This is a historic step toward stability, unity, and inclusive governance," Minister Daud said on his social media.
According to the latest estimates from the World Population Review, the population of Mogadishu in 2025 is approximately 2.8 million, meaning that the number of registered voters represents about 17% of the city's population.
It is important to note that the registration figures currently disclosed come solely from the Minister of Information, while the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC), the body responsible for overseeing the elections, has not yet officially confirmed these numbers.
