Ethiopia, 12 October 2025 — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Sunday in Addis Ababa to discuss bilateral relations.
According to the Somali Presidency, the talks focused on enhancing cooperation based on mutual respect, sovereignty, and shared regional interests. The two leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining good neighbourliness and promoting development-oriented partnerships.
President Mohamud underscored Somalia’s commitment to regional stability and collaboration in countering terrorism, noting that peace and security in the Horn of Africa depend on collective efforts.
President Hassan Sheikh’s last visit to Addis Ababa was in September, when he attended the African Climate Summit and took part in the inauguration of the Abay Dam.
The efforts to strengthen relations come after tensions arose last year when Mogadishu accused Ethiopia of interfering with its sovereignty by smuggling arms to Puntland and Galmudug, accusations that the Abiy administration denied.
Late last year, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan brokered a peace deal between Somalia and Ethiopia, which helped ease political tensions in the East African region. This occurred after Ethiopia made a deal with Somaliland to lease a stretch of its coastline for an Ethiopian port and military base in exchange for diplomatic recognition, although this arrangement was never officially confirmed by Addis Ababa.
