Ethiopia, 14 November 2025 — Somali Regional State (SRS) President Mustafe Mohammed Omar on Friday launched the construction of a new modern bridge over the Bidhbidhis Valley in Jigjiga, a project aimed at easing traffic congestion, improving neighborhood connectivity, and addressing chronic flooding in the area.
The bridge will accommodate vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians, and is designed to support the city’s growing transportation needs.
Officials say the 36-meter structure will eliminate long-standing mobility challenges caused by seasonal flash floods, which have repeatedly disrupted movement and economic activity.
President Mustafe said the project reflects the regional government’s broader vision to modernize Jigjiga and elevate its status as a leading Somali urban center.

“I am pleased to be part of this historic moment, as this major project will transform the city of Jigjiga. We have worked to build a capital that represents the Somali people and deserves its place as a true regional city.
“With continued development, Jigjiga is on its path to becoming one of the key cities in the Horn of Africa,” President Mustafe said.
Construction is set to begin immediately. Authorities say the bridge will play a central role in strengthening infrastructure, supporting economic growth, and improving urban mobility once completed.
