Somalia, 2 December 2025 — The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) announced today that it has extended the free national ID registration period until January 31, 2026, after the previous phase concluded on November 30.
NIRA said the extension is intended to provide more Somali citizens the opportunity to obtain their National Identity Cards as the nationwide registration campaign continues.

The announcement follows NIRA’s 24 November update confirming that more than one million citizens had already been registered under the national ID programme, which remains free of charge.
According to earlier NIRA statements, the National ID is also expected to be integrated with domestic travel systems early next year, further expanding its functionality as part of Somalia’s digital governance reforms.
