Somalia, 2 November 2025 – The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has announced a major crackdown on human traffickers operating in the country accusing them of gross human rights violations.
The decision followed a closed-door security meeting held in Mogadishu, on Saturday, chaired by the Head of CID Muhudin Ahmed Osman.
During the meeting, officials presented updates on ongoing investigations on trafficking and efforts to freeze financial accounts used by various networks.
The CID Chief stressed the agency’s commitment to dismantling all human trafficking networks operating inside and outside Somalia, adding that anyone facilitating illegal migration will face the full force of the law.
“Individuals engaged in these activities must be swiftly investigated and brought to justice. I am instructing the intelligence units to trace and identify such people — because they pose a serious threat to Somali youth,” said Muhudin. “This matter requires thorough investigation, pursuit, and accountability.”The CID Chief emphasized strengthening cooperation among security agencies and accelerating investigations and prosecutions to dismantle networks responsible for human trafficking or facilitating illegal migration.
Each year, the government receives hundreds of Somali youths repatriated from various countries. Majority of them are normally smuggled out of Somalia with promises of better life abroad. However, many end up languishing in prisons or live in squalid conditions.
