Somalia, 4 November 2025 -The Somalia Internet Governance Forum (SIGF 2025) officially opened today in Mogadishu, bringing together key stakeholders from government, civil society, academia, financial institutions, and the telecommunications and technology sectors to discuss the future of Somalia’s digital landscape.
The two-day forum, held from 4-5 November, is organized by the National Communications Authority (NCA) for the third consecutive year, with discussions focusing on digital identity, local innovation, Somali language preservation, artificial intelligence (AI), and data governance.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre who presided over the opening of the event, emphasized the need to balance the opportunities and risks associated with internet use.
“We need the internet — it is both medicine and poison,” said the Prime Minister. “My advice is to use the medicine wisely and protect ourselves from the poison.”
Speakers and panelists are expected to explore ways Somalia can build a secure, inclusive, and innovation-driven digital environment, while strengthening collaboration between the government, private sector, and civil society.
Organizers said the forum aims to unify Somalia’s vision, policy, and innovation in digital governance, fostering trust, understanding, and partnership in the country’s growing digital ecosystem.
