Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Somalia’s international partners have called for calm and peaceful dialogue in Garowe on Tuesday following heavy military mobilization between the Puntland State government and opposition politicians amid electoral disputes.
In a statement, the joint partners expressed deep concern about the tensions in the city, which have severe impacts on civilians.
“International partners are concerned about the risk of higher tensions, including the current mobilization of forces, in Garowe. The presence of these forces is intimidating civilians and has led to the closure of schools,” read the joint statement from international partners.
They further called on both the opposition and the president of Puntland to resolve issues through peaceful dialogue to de-escalate tensions further.
“There is no justification for violence or the threat of force. Grievances should be addressed peacefully and through dialogue. We call on all parties to resolve their differences through peaceful means,” the statement read in part.
The statement added, “We are monitoring the situation closely and are calling for the immediate de-escalation of tensions and urgent talks by political and other local leaders.”
The joint international partners reiterated their commitment to supporting Somalia’s efforts in building a peaceful and stable government.
Heavily armed men allied with the two parties began military movements in Garowe city, causing many families to flee their homes on Sunday.
The opposition politicians have accused President Deni of deploying additional military troops in the city, alleging that they are intended to suppress the opposition in case of any disagreements.
Local sources stated that the opposition parties have raised concerns about electoral amendments before the Parliament, scheduled for debate on Monday. However, the debate has been adjourned due to tensions within the city.
The traditional elders have expressed condemnation for the political tensions and military presence that forced families to evacuate their homes. They called on both parties to engage in discussions and resolve issues through peaceful means.
On Friday, President Said Abdullahi Deni expressed his readiness to engage in discussions with opposition politicians on electoral issues, stating that political differences should not lead to conflicts but rather a peaceful transition.
The armed forces allied to the opposition and government forces clashed on 20th June this year, killing over 30 people and injuring more than 50 others, mostly civilians.
