Somaliland, 6 November 2025 — The Ministry of Energy and Minerals of Somaliland has announced a nationwide reduction in electricity prices — with the exception of Berbera — to make power more affordable for households and businesses.
According to an official decree signed by Minister Eng. Ahmed Jama Barre, the new electricity rate will take effect on 1st December, setting the unit price at $0.59 per kilowatt-hour, down from the previous rate of $0.73 per unit.
The city of Berbera will maintain a separate pricing system due to its unique energy structure.
“The Ministry has long been working to ensure that Somaliland has affordable, reliable, and safe electricity,” the statement from the Ministry read.
“This reduction reflects the government’s commitment to easing the public’s economic burden and mitigating the impact of global fuel price increases.”

The Ministry noted that in June 2022, the electricity price had been increased by $0.10 per unit to offset rising fuel costs.
However, with recent market stability and improvements in domestic energy efficiency, the Ministry said it has decided, in consultation with Somaliland Energy Commission, to lower prices.
This decision follows the earlier directive by President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi ‘Irro’ ordering a reduction in electricity and water tariffs across Somaliland to help citizens cope with the high cost of living.
