December 16 2025 - The government has moved to restore calm in Tana River County following renewed inter-ethnic violence that has left more than 20 people dead over a period of 16 months.
Dawan Africa has confirmed that Hirimani Ward Representative Ismail Kodobo and a former Bangale Ward aspirant were arrested and recorded statements with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Tana River County.
Former Bura Member of Parliament Ali Wario has also reportedly been summoned by investigators as authorities intensify efforts to identify financiers and instigators behind the recurring clan clashes that are increasingly getting out of hand.
At least three people have been killed in the past week alone, with tensions rising across Tana River County. Some residents in Bura have fled their homes to nearby towns, including Garissa, amid fears of further violence.
On Monday night, the Hirimani Ward representative claimed that individuals believed to be DCI officers visited his home in the early hours of the morning. He questioned the manner of the operation, alleging that the officers threatened to throw teargas if his children failed to open the gate.
During the incident, neighbours and supporters reportedly came to his defence, stating that he was willing to cooperate with security agencies.

Speaking after his release on Wednesday, Kodobo called for calm, saying the government has a right to investigate any allegations. He maintained that he has consistently worked to promote peace in the area.
“If there is anything suspected that I have been involved in, the government has the right to follow it up. I have never been involved in anything that may bring conflict in my entire life,” he said.
The county lawmaker said he has been advocating for peace, including sponsoring a Tupendane (let’s love one another) tournament aimed at fostering harmony and coexistence among communities.
Kodobo urged his supporters to remain calm, warning that his arrest should not further inflame the already volatile situation. He reiterated his willingness to cooperate with the DCI as investigations continue.
He also assured residents that he is safe and asked them to allow investigative agencies to carry out their work. Unconfirmed reports indicate that more than 25 people from both the Degodia and Orma communities may have lost their lives so far, with officials noting that the figure could be higher as some victims have not been taken to hospital.
