United States, 21 January 2026 U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday made critical remarks about Somalia, saying piracy was “about the only thing” the country was known for, during a White House press briefing marking the first anniversary of his second term.
Referring to Somalia, Trump said, “So when Somalia—the Somalian—you know what they're good at? That's about the only thing they're good at, is they're good at pirating ships at sea. Big ships.”
Trump made the comments while discussing maritime security, arguing that his administration’s approach to targeting pirate vessels had led to a decline in attacks on commercial shipping.

He described Somali piracy as a major threat to large oil tankers and said insurance companies often prefer paying ransom rather than risking damage to ships that can cost more than $1 billion to build.
Trump also portrayed Somalia as lacking basic state institutions, saying the country had no functioning government, military or police force.
Somalia has endured decades of civil conflict and insurgency but has a federally recognized government backed by the United Nations and African Union forces. Piracy off its coast peaked in the late 2000s and early 2010s before declining following increased international naval patrols and onboard security measures.
