Turkey, 31 December 2025 Türkiye has completed feasibility studies for a plan to build a space launch facility in Somalia, a move the government views as one of the most strategic projects to be implemented in decades with the potential to significantly impact the country's economic, technological, and strategic development.
Türkiye’s Minister of Industry and Technology, Mehmet Fatih Kacir, confirmed that all feasibility and design work for the project has been completed and that the first phase of construction is set to begin. The facility will be built on land allocated by Somalia to Türkiye under a bilateral cooperation agreement signed between the two countries.
The decision to select Somalia is based on its unique strategic advantages, including its proximity to the equator, which allows for year-round launches, its long coastline, and relatively low air and maritime traffic. These factors make Somalia one of the most suitable locations in the world for space launch operations.
The project is expected to open new economic opportunities for Somalia, with the spaceport serving as a global hub for commercial space companies, technology testing, and satellite launches.
More from Somalia
In addition, the space launch facility is expected to enhance Somalia’s capacity in science, education, and technology, providing Somali youth with opportunities for training, research, and integration into the global high-tech ecosystem.
Officials from both countries said the project goes beyond economic benefits, noting that it will also strengthen security, boost Somalia’s international standing, and reinforce its strategic role in the Horn of Africa and beyond.
After decades of grappling with security and political challenges, Somalia sees the project as a symbol of transformation and integration into a global, technology-driven future.
