Kenya 28 November 2025 - United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate David Ndakwa has been declared the new Member of Parliament for Malava after clinching victory in a tense and closely fought by-election held on Thursday.
Ndakwa garnered 21,564 votes, edging out Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) candidate Seth Panyako, who secured 20,210 votes. The margin, just over 1,300 votes, reflects the intensity of a contest marked by political rivalry, accusations of malpractice, and pockets of election-day unrest.
The by-election was triggered by the death of the former MP, drawing significant national attention as parties sought to measure their influence ahead of the 2027 General Election. Both UDA and DAP-K mounted vigorous campaigns, each framing the race as crucial to their regional foothold.
In the days before the vote, Panyako accused state-backed groups and ruling party supporters of orchestrating widespread electoral interference. He alleged incidents of voter bribery, intimidation, and even the circulation of pre-marked ballot papers. Panyako also claimed that unknown individuals, whom he linked to police, attempted to attack him and his family at a local hotel, allegations authorities did not immediately address.
Ndakwa, however, defended his campaign, saying he spent weeks engaging communities across the constituency and urged supporters to uphold peace. He insisted the race should be decided by voters without hostility or coercion.

Election night was marred by confrontation between rival supporters, resulting in injuries and reports of damaged property in some areas. Despite the tension, polling opened on time across the 198 stations, with officials reporting smooth operations and functional biometric kits. Security officers were deployed throughout the constituency to prevent disruptions.
Announcing the results at the constituency tally centre, the returning officer confirmed that voting materials were delivered to all stations and that counting proceeded without major challenges.
Ndakwa’s win bolsters UDA’s parliamentary strength and gives the ruling party firmer ground in Kakamega County. However, the narrow defeat and unresolved allegations from the opposition side are expected to keep political temperatures high.
As he prepares to assume office, Ndakwa now faces the task of uniting a constituency emerging from one of the most polarising mini-polls in recent months.
