Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) today announced that the voter registration campaign in the Banadir region has been extended by one month, with the new deadline set for August 15, 2025.
The campaign, which officially began on April 15, 2025, is part of Somalia’s process for direct one-person, one-vote elections.
“This additional time added to the voter registration campaign in the Banadir region comes as the number of people turning out to register continues to increase each day,” the commission said in a statement.
The commission added that the extension is intended to ensure that more people have the opportunity to participate in the election process.
Since registration began, the Banadir region has seen three months of continuous campaigning, with Somalia’s Minister of Information, Daud Aweis, announcing on July 13 that the number of registered voters in Mogadishu has surpassed 500,000. However, the commission has not yet officially confirmed this figure.
Banadir, which is the country’s political center, was the first region to start the voter registration campaign. It is now being joined by similar campaigns in South West, Galmudug, and Hirshabelle, the latter of which began this week.
