24 January 2026 - Wajir County is currently grappling with a devastating drought that continues to affect lives and livelihoods across the region.
On Saturday, the Baitul Mal organisation, led by Hon. Ugas Sheikh, flagged off an emergency water trucking project set to cover 37 locations, benefiting all six sub-counties of Wajir.
This timely intervention will provide much-needed relief to affected communities.
The county is facing a worsening humanitarian crisis as a prolonged drought continues to disrupt livelihoods and leave thousands of residents without reliable access to water.
Speaking during the launch, leaders on the ground called on the national government to urgently intervene, urging President William Ruto to declare the drought a national disaster and mobilise additional resources to support affected counties.
They further appealed for the scaling up of both national and county mitigation measures, warning that the situation could deteriorate further if immediate action is not taken.
Speaking to the press, Wajir County Senator Abass Sheikh urged H.E. the President to declare the drought a national disaster and call for national and county mitigation measures to be doubled.

On the side, Wajir County is facing blackouts day and night. As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, the residents of Wajir are still struggling to witness better days of lighting.
The whole county now depends on generators as a short-term solution.
