Kenya, 9 December 2025 - Prominent lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has shed new light on his unexpected political loyalties, explaining why he stands behind Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Party despite his recent work alongside former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking during an interview on Obinna TV on Monday night, Njiru addressed what many Kenyans have long viewed as a contradiction: a lawyer from Mt Kenya, once a fierce critic of Gachagua, later joining his defence team during the impeachment process, yet ultimately choosing to align himself with Wiper rather than Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Njiru clarified that his loyalty lies not with individuals but with the broader ideals of the United Opposition.
“I don’t support Riggy G; I support the Opposition,” he said firmly. “The United Opposition is not about a single personality. And for the record, I am not a member of DCP. I belong to the Wiper Patriotic Front.”
Even so, Njiru said he would back any candidate chosen by the United Opposition for the 2027 presidential contest — including Gachagua — provided the nominee demonstrates commitment to the coalition’s core values.
“What matters to me is adherence to the rule of law, constitutionalism, democracy, respect for institutions, human rights, accountability, equity and social justice,” he explained.

Njiru’s complicated relationship with Gachagua has drawn public interest. Before the impeachment motion, the lawyer was among the former deputy president’s loudest critics online. Yet when Gachagua faced removal from office, Njiru joined his legal defence, a move that softened relations and ultimately led the two to sit on the same side of the political divide.
Still, Njiru maintains that his personal principles, rather than regional loyalty, shape his choices. Despite Gachagua being a fellow Mt Kenya figure, the lawyer says Kalonzo Musyoka embodies the leadership qualities he believes the country needs.
He went further during the interview, making a direct appeal to President William Ruto.
“Mr William Ruto, my name is Ndegwa Njiru, from Kirinyaga. If you could do Kenyans a favour and resign, you would be doing this country a great service,” he said.
Njiru is now openly backing Kalonzo to unseat President Ruto in 2027, describing the Wiper leader as trustworthy and steady — the kind of figure, he says, who can anchor Kenya through uncertain times.
