Kenya, 23 December 2025 - South Africa opened their AFCON 2025 campaign in dramatic fashion, securing a 2–1 victory over Angola in Marrakesh as Lyle Foster delivered the decisive strike to earn all three points for Bafana Bafana in their Group B opener.
The match at the Stade de Marrakech started evenly, but South Africa seized the initiative in the 21st minute when midfielder Oswin Appollis pounced on a loose ball and slotted home with a well-placed finish, giving the hosts an early lead thanks to a slick assist from Foster.
Angola, determined not to be outdone, responded just minutes later.
In the 35th minute, forward Show capitalised on a set-piece situation, guiding a well-struck effort into the bottom corner to bring the Palancas Negras level and send both sets of fans into raptures.
When the second half began, the encounter remained competitive, with both sides creating chances.

However, South Africa’s persistence paid off in the 79th minute when Lyle Foster unleashed a superb curling strike from outside the box, restoring the lead and ultimately proving to be the match-winner. Foster’s composed finish showcased his quality and timing, earning Bafana their first AFCON victory in a group opener in over two decades.
The result gives South Africa a valuable early advantage in Group B and boosts confidence as they continue their pursuit of continental glory. Angola, despite the defeat, impressed with their intensity and will look to bounce back in their next fixture.
