Kenya, 23 December 2025 - Egypt kicked off their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 campaign in thrilling fashion as Mohamed Salah scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to secure a 2–1 victory over Zimbabwe in their Group B opener at the Grande Stade d’Agadir on Monday night.
The hosts were taken by surprise early in the match when Zimbabwe struck first.
Prince Dube capitalised on a well-timed pass inside the area in the 20th minute, turning and placing his finish past Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy to put the underdogs ahead against the run of play.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances throughout the first half, Egypt struggled to find a way past the Zimbabwe defence and goalkeeper Washington Arubi, who made several key saves to keep his side in front.
Egypt’s pressure and urgency grew after the break, and their persistence paid off in the 64th minute when Omar Marmoush unleashed a powerful strike from inside the box to bring the Pharaohs level.

As the game entered added time and looked destined for a draw, Egypt earned a final attacking opportunity inside the box. Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, restored to the starting XI after recent club challenges, was in the right place at the right time, firing home a left-footed finish in the 91st minute to seal a memorable comeback win and spark jubilant celebrations inside the stadium.
The victory gives Egypt a valuable three points in Group B, placing them level with other early winners such as South Africa, who also claimed a 2–1 victory in their opener. The result also provides a significant morale boost for the Pharaohs as they look to progress deep into the tournament and chase their eighth AFCON title.
